Basel, the most innovative economic area in Switzerland
The Basel region is Switzerland’s most dynamic and innovative economic area. Its success is due to its position as Europe’s no. 1 life sciences cluster with global players Novartis and Roche as well as numerous research institutions. This, in turn, draws talent from all over the world. In Basel-City alone, 34% of the population comes from abroad. Located at the heart of Europe, right next to Germany and France, it is rated as the most accessible region in Switzerland. More than that, its incomparable art and architecture scene and its lively approach to life also put Basel-City among the “hippest” of the Swiss cantons.
Education and research in the Basel Region have a long tradition – 550 years, to be precise
The establishment of an university in 1460 marks the beginning of the centuries-old academic tradition of the Basel Region. In more recent times, innovative companies in the area have had a strong pull on young talents for decades. Today, the combination of these two Basel essentials has created a thriving environment for research and development activities. R&D has consistently provided the local economy with a healthy dose of disruption. Accordingly, it doesn’t come as a great surprise that several inventions and scientific discoveries of the Basel Region have been awarded with the Nobel Prize.
